Christian artists respond to meaning of Good Friday
in twelfth annual community art show at Second Presbyterian Church

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The twelfth annual “What’s So Good About Good Friday?” community art show presents local and regional artists’ work about Good Friday and their Christian faith. Artists will exhibit their creations that center on the power of Jesus’s crucifixion, death, and resurrection to accomplish something impactful and life changing. This exhibit can be viewed online on the Art Circle of Bloomington-Normal Facebook page and in a video that will be shown indoors and outdoors at Second Presbyterian Church, 404 N. Prairie Street, in downtown Bloomington, Illinois on Friday, April 2.

The art show is organized by Art Circle of Bloomington-Normal, a faith-based group of artists and creative people, in conjunction with Second Presbyterian Church.

Treighton Haddon, Senior Pastor and Head of Staff at Second Presbyterian Church, “Living in a world that seems consumed by darkness, confusion, and isolation, we take this time to turn all of our senses to the call which leads to the transformational power of resurrection! With the many voices that seem to clutter our lives and ears, we approach this year’s art show in a way that actively reflects how the power of the cross and resurrection are still relevant and life changing.”

Each year, more than 1,000 people view the work by artists who are professional artists, accomplished amateur artists, and school children. Last year’s online art show included over 65 pieces of art made by artists from six states.

“For the Christ-follower, the cross isn’t the end of the story, it is the beginning of our new story. This show allows artists to shine their artistic light for Christ,” said Angel Ambrose, an artist and one of the Art Circle organizers.

Second Presbyterian’s solemn Good Friday worship service begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 2. The thoughtful service features Bible readings with diminishing light, art, and music until the sanctuary is dark and utterly quiet. All are welcome. COVID-19 precautions are in place and are mandatory. A video of the Good Friday art show will be shown indoors in two viewing rooms beginning at 6:30 p.m. and outdoors until 9 p.m. on Friday, April 2.

Second Presbyterian is committed to helping people deepen their love for Christ and one another. Information about Second Presbyterian Church can be found at http://www.secondpres.com.

The Art Circle of Bloomington-Normal mission is to foster a creative community gathering in Faith, Hope and Love inspiring Beauty, Truth and Goodness through individual expression and appreciation of the Arts. Information about Art Circle can be found at www.artcirclebn.com.

Summer Sabbatical: No Meeting in June and July

Summer Sabbatical: No Meeting in June and July

Art Circle is going to take a sabbatical in both June and July. Our hope is to have an in person meeting in August.

Dear Art Circle,

There is no June First Friday tonight on Friday, June 5, in downtown Bloomington. However, if you are looking for an art-themed outing, both Inside Out:Accessible Art and Main Gallery 404 have reopened their galleries to visitors wearing facemasks with social distancing while admiring the art for sale.

Even though quarantine ended on May 30, there are still restrictions about groups of more than ten meeting in person. Art Circle last met in March. Our April and May meetings were cancelled due to the governor’s shelter in place order and COVID-19.

Jacob’s Well, Art Circle’s meeting place, is remaining closed to in real life gatherings as a protection to their parishioners who are more vulnerable to coronavirus. In this time of transition, from Phase 2 to Phase 3 (where we are now in re-opening Illinois), Art Circle is going to take a sabbatical in both June and July. Art Circle will not be holding a monthly meeting in June and July. If there is art news to share we will continue to email you the details.

Our hope is to have an in person meeting in August. Our hope is to meet in person on September 10 with the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) as a guest speaker from 7:15-8pm with art sharing to follow in the time remaining. We hope Illinois is able to safely move to Phase 4 of the re-open Illinois plan this summer.

REMINDER: Sign up for the next art show at the Community Cancer Center from September 2020 to January 2021 is complete. Artist confirmation emails will be sent in August, when we hope to know for sure CCC #2 2020 will be able to be installed on Monday, September 14 as planned now.

We hope you are able to make art during this time of summer sabbatical. We miss seeing you in real life and gathering together monthly at Jacob’s Well. Our prayers are with you and for you.

Blessings,
Janean, LizBeth, and Angel

11th Annual What’s So Good About Good Friday? Art Show

11th Annual What’s So Good About Good Friday? Art Show

Eleventh annual “What’s So Good About Good Friday?” art show at Second Presbyterian Church in downtown Bloomington on Thursday, April 9 and Friday, April 10, 2020. This art show centers on the power of Jesus’ crucifixion, death, and resurrection to accomplish something impactful and lifechanging.

Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.”  (John 8:12)

The idea for this show was birthed in 2010, when one of Angel Ambrose’s friends asked the question, “Why do Christ-followers think the cross is a good thing, when it was such an instrument of torture?” Her friend’s curiosity and discomfort were apparent as she inquired. Angel answered, “Because for the Christ-follower, the cross isn’t the end of the story, it is the beginning of our new story.” This show allows artists to shine their artistic light for Christ.

We ask each artist to express the meaning of “What’s So Good About Good Friday?” in your own life. This meaning will be different for artist and that’s the beauty of this art show.  For some it is a literal depiction of Scripture. For others, it is an abstract of shapes and colors.  Each year, we see artistic creations that stir our souls and help us contemplate the beauty of the cross. Our greatest desire is to glorify God through art that will point viewers to the heart of our Lord.

Art will be on display on Thursday, April 9 from 11:00 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Good Friday, April 10 from 11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.. Reception for artists from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. on Good Friday, April 10. Second Presbyterian Church invites you to worship at the Good Friday Tenebrae service to follow the reception at 7:00 p.m. Artwork will also be on display during Easter Sunday services.

Pamela Cather “Wildlife Photography”
Guest Speaker @ Art Circle on Thursday, September 12
7:00 p.m. @ Jacob’s Well, 304 Jersey Ave., Normal, IL

Master Photographer Pamela Cather will talk about her passion for wildlife photography at Art Circle on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at 7:00 p.m at Jacob’s Well Community Church in Normal, IL. Pamela will share some of her favorite images; many of which were taken locally at or around Lake Bloomington. You’ll also learn some basic tips that you can use photographing wildlife for yourself.
We can see wildlife all around us. From the simplicity of a bumble bee collecting pollen or a fox playing or stalking its prey, capturing the essence of the beast is what every wildlife photographer seeks. Finding those special moments when the animals display their own behavioral patterns or human-like characteristics require patience but are well worth it once that unique photo is captured.
Art Circle’s September meeting with local art announcements and art sharing will follow Pamela’s wildlife photography presentation. We are looking forward to a great evening. All are welcome.
